Some claim that this is the first public pool in Iceland, whether true or just a legend, it is undoubtedly one of the most unique and worthwhile pools to visit in Iceland.
Located near the famous Golden Circle, adjacent to the small town of Flúðir, is the beautiful geothermal pool called the ‘Secret Lagoon.’ In recent years, the lagoon has become highly sought after among tourists, and the name is far less fitting.
This is likely the oldest pool in Iceland, established in 1891 in Hverahólmi, a geothermal area near Flúðir. What sets this place apart are the rich natural resources of warm water flowing continuously from warm springs, supplying 100% of the lagoon’s water.
The water from the pool’s source springs flows continuously, taking 24 hours for a complete replacement. The water is warm, pure, and rich in sulfur. The water temperature remains at 38-40 degrees Celsius throughout the year.
The owners have preserved the lagoon as much as possible in its natural setting, adding significantly to the authentic Icelandic feel compared to larger, more commercialized lagoons in the vicinity.
What will you find on the premises? In addition to the pool, you can enjoy a cafeteria serving drinks and light meals, as well as comfortable seating areas in a heated space. You’ll be asked to use the showers before entering the pool, and private lockers will be available for your personal belongings. Outside the pool, you can enjoy an excellent fish and chips stand.
Hours of Operation and Ticket Types:
During the summer season from May 1 to September 30, the lagoon is open from 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM. During the winter season from October 1 to April 30, the lagoon is open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
