Join the company SecretIceland for an 8-hour tour to the Lakagígar craters in Vatnajökull National Park. The journey will be made in a specially adapted vehicle for the roads and river crossings you’ll encounter on the way. The tours are conducted in small groups with a maximum of 11 passengers.

Over 200 years ago, a volcanic eruption in Iceland caused catastrophic consequences for the climate, agriculture, and transportation across the northern hemisphere. The Lakagígar craters, a living testimony to this eruption, span about 25 km and are believed to be the largest lava flow ever on Earth. The Lakagígar craters are part of Vatnajökull National Park, which was nominated for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018, and is currently under consideration.

After being picked up from the hotel in the seemingly impossible-to-pronounce town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, you’ll board the super jeep and head straight to the Lakagígar craters. The arrival at Lakagígar is around 10:30 AM. The Lakagígar volcano rises about 200 meters above the surrounding area and is located in the middle of the crater row. Two and a half hours will be dedicated to exploring the area. The experienced guide will take you to several hills nearby, where you’ll enjoy an amazing panoramic view.

On the way back, you’ll encounter more beautiful places, including the hidden waterfall Fagrifoss and the legendary Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. This breathtaking canyon is often called the most beautiful canyon in the world!

You’ll return to Kirkjubæjarklaustur around 5:00 PM at the original pickup point.
